On The Tragic Brutal Murder of Dariush Mehrjooi

 This morning, I woke up to the horrific news out of Iran of the brutal murder of the acclaimed Iranian Director, Dariush Mehrjooi, and his wife in their own home.   As I briefly noted in a notation on my Instagram corner, I extend my profound condolences to Mr Mehrjooi, his family, the Iranian Artistic Community, and all of Iran.

Today, we mourn the tragic passing of a true cinematic visionary, the legendary

Iranian filmmaker

Dariush Mehrjui.

His passing leaves a void in the world of cinema that can never be filled. Dariush Mehrjui was a pioneer, an artist, and a storyteller whose impact on Iranian and world cinema was profound and enduring.


Mr. Mehrjui was considered one of the pioneers of Iranian cinema’s new wave movement, and his career was marked by a commitment to exploring the complexities of human existence, often delving into the intricacies of Iranian society and culture. His films were a mirror to the soul of his homeland, reflecting its struggles, aspirations, and timeless beauty. Through his lens, he shed light on the human condition, transcending borders and languages.  


One of Mr. Mehrjui's most iconic works was "The Cow" (1969), a poignant and groundbreaking film that showcased the rural life of Iran and touched the hearts of audiences worldwide. It was a testament to his ability to capture the essence of the human experience, even in the most challenging circumstances.

Throughout his career, Mehrjui continued to produce masterpieces like "The Cycle" (1978), "Hamoun" (1990), and "Leila" (1996), each a testament to his storytelling prowess and his dedication to the craft of filmmaking. His work earned critical acclaim, numerous awards, and a permanent place in the annals of cinematic history.


Mr. Mehrjui was not just a filmmaker but also a mentor and inspiration to countless aspiring directors, actors, and artists who were touched by his wisdom and passion for the art of cinema. His contributions went beyond the screen, as he played a significant role in the growth of Iranian cinema on the global stage.


As we bid farewell to this cinematic giant, let us remember Dariush Mehrjui not only for his extraordinary body of work but for the enduring impact he has had on our understanding of Iranian culture and the human experience. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of filmmakers and film enthusiasts.


Dariush Mehrjui's tragic and brutal murder is a profound loss, but his films and his influence will live on, reminding us that great art has the power to transcend time and connect us all through the universal language of storytelling.


According to media reports, Mr. Mehrjui, along with his wife Vahideh Mohammadifar were both killed in their home in the city of Karaj outside of Tehran on October 14. Our thoughts and condolences go out to their family, friends, and all those who have been touched by their works. 


In his memory, let us celebrate the life and legacy of this extraordinary filmmaker who has left an indelible mark on the world of cinema.
